There's something magical about Christmas movies, isn't there? Every year, we find ourselves returning to the same familiar stories. We know the characters, we remember the lines, and we already know how the stories end. Yet somehow, they still make us laugh, cry, hope, and believe in the wonder of Christmas all over again.
This Advent season at the United Methodist Church of Summit, we're bringing a little Hollywood magic into our sanctuary with our new worship series, “Lights. Camera. Christmas!”
Throughout Advent, we'll explore some of our favorite Christmas movies alongside the timeless story of Christ's birth. Because beneath the humor, nostalgia, and holiday magic, these beloved films often reveal something deeper about the very things Advent invites us to embrace: hope, peace, joy, love, and the extraordinary ways God shows up in ordinary lives.
Here's what's coming to a sanctuary near you!
November 29 – First Sunday of Advent
Home Alone | Isaiah 2:1–5
What does it mean to feel alone, and where do we find hope when the world feels uncertain? We'll kick off Advent with a reminder that even when we feel forgotten or left behind, God has not abandoned us. God's light continues to lead us home.
December 6 – Second Sunday of Advent
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer | Matthew 3:1–12
Sometimes the very things that make us different are the gifts God uses to illuminate the world. As John the Baptist calls us to prepare the way, we'll discover how God works through unexpected people and unlikely circumstances.
December 13 – Third Sunday of Advent
A Charlie Brown Christmas | Matthew 11:2–11
In a season filled with shopping, decorating, and endless expectations, it's easy to lose sight of what Christmas is really about. Charlie Brown's search for meaning reminds us that the greatest joy isn't found in a perfectly decorated tree or a pile of presents, but in the promise of God's love.
December 20 – Fourth Sunday of Advent
It's a Wonderful Life | Matthew 1:18–25
Have you ever wondered whether your life really makes a difference? Through George Bailey's unforgettable story and Joseph's courageous faith, we'll explore how ordinary acts of love, sacrifice, and faithfulness can change the world in extraordinary ways.
December 24 – Christmas Eve - 5PM and 7PM Services
The Greatest Story Ever Told | Luke 2:1–20
And finally, on Christmas Eve, we return to the story that started it all. No special effects, no Hollywood production, no elaborate set could ever capture the wonder of what happened in a humble manger in Bethlehem. God entered our world, not with fanfare or fame, but as a vulnerable child, bringing light into the darkness and love into a weary world.
Friends, Advent is more than a countdown to Christmas. It's an invitation to pay attention to the ways God is still writing a story of hope, redemption, and love in our lives and in our world.
So grab your family, invite a friend, and join us each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. You won't need popcorn (although I won't judge if you bring some!), just an open heart and a willingness to experience the Christmas story in a whole new way.
Lights. Camera. Christmas!
The greatest story ever told is still unfolding, and we all have a part to play.
See you at the movies… I mean, church!
Grace and peace,
Pastor Laura
